This beautiful braided appliqué will look great accenting the top scallops on your shafts or accenting the finger pulls.  Use your imagination

Bruce Grant, in his book "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding" copyright 1972 Cornell Maritime Press, Inc. demonstrated how to make this one sided appliqué.

However, this tutorial describes a two sided version.  This version looks nice if your finishing the insides of your boots.  Or you can use this appliqué on a set of mule ear pulls.

Finished Appliqué

The drawings below will show you each step in making a two sided lone star appliqué.

Notice that when the appliqué is turned over, the hole Numbers on the right side will be on the left side.

As an example, hole No. 2, will be on the right side in the front view... but on the left side in the back view.

Step One

Starting in hole No. 1... Insert the leather thong from the back... then through hole No. 4...

Up - 1    Down - #4

Step Two

Turn the work over... starting from hole No. 4... Insert the leather thong through hole No. 2...

Down - #2

Step Three

Turn the work over again to the front view...
and insert the leather thong down hole No. 5...
crossing over one...

Down - #5

Step Four

In the back view, insert the thong down hole No. 2...

Down - #2

Step Five

Front view, insert the thong down hole No. 4...

Down - #4

Step Six

Back view, insert the thong down hole No. 1... crossing over one...

Down - #1

Step Seven

Front view, cross over one thong, then under the next... then down hole No. 3...

Over - 1
Under - 1
Down - #3

Step Eight

Back view, the thong goes under one, the over one... then down hole No. 5...

Under - 1
Over - 1
Down - #5

Step Nine

Front view, the thong goes under one, then over one and down hole No. 3

Under - 1
Over - 1
Down - #3

Step Ten

Back view, the thong goes over one, then under one.

All that is left to do is to splice the ends together.

Hammer the appliqué so everything lies flat.
